Well, for the nearsighted, the Vancouver Olympics were a huge success for Vancouver and Canada as a whole. I haven’t seen so much patriotism EVER, all Canada days included. Talking to my friend in Toronto there was just as much celebrating in those streets as there was in Vancouver.

And why not, the men’s hockey team defeating arch rivals, the USA in an overtime nail biter is the epitome of Canadian spirit! With one sharp-angled goal, Sidney Crosby became an instant folk hero in Canadian history.

It would seem that the Canadian response was infectious to all that came in contact with us too!

“We were taken aback,” said Rene Smith-Valade, spokesperson for the Vancouver Organizing Committee, who regularly admitted to officials’ underestimation of the volume, intensity and frequency of passion expressed by our local crowd.

Most impressed were the athletes.

“These were fantastic Games in a beautiful setting run by a really proud city,” said Billy Demong, the U.S. gold medal winner in Nordic combined. “In a little way, it was sort of a North American Olympics. The Canadian fans were wonderful, and there were so many enthusiastic fans from the States. Canadians and Americans were rooting for each others’ teams.”

So let’s hope that we have showed our best, most patriotic side to the world so that they know we aren’t the push-overs some might want to believe.

The real mark however will be how we handle the Olympic hangover that is most assuredly to come. Build for years, host for weeks, compete for seconds, coexist with the legacy -positive or negative -for decades. When a city hosts the Olympics, it signs up to live with an inheritance that lingers many times longer than the Games last in the first place. B.C. has built venues and transportation infrastructure that will last 60 years or more (as IOC president Jacques Rogge said); the question is whether the price was worth it. Vancouver taxpayers take to the starting line already $1-billion behind thanks to cost overruns and the effects of the recession on one project alone, the Olympic Village in the False Creek area. The final cost of the 2010 Games will be difficult to tally in the short term.

The 2010 Olympics have meant a lot of things to a lot of people. I believe more mixed feelings are to come. Stay tuned as things unfold…

The Olympic venue Whistler (Alpine skiing, cross country, ski jumping and more) is known for its two mountains, “Whistler” and “Blackcomb”. But nearly 10,000 people and astonish the thousands of tourists not bad, as they may admire the famous ski area suddenly eight new, very hot mountains.

The attractive appearance of the girls provides almost as much attention as a medal ceremony of the Swiss athletes before the House of Switzerland. Hardly posing Emily, Carley, Liz and Holly at the Medal Plaza, forming a large (male) human grape.

Everyone wants to be remembered photo shoot, which get four girls on her best smile and shine with the sun around the bet. Blick.ch it wants to know more and ask the photo-models, what they find to be particularly sexy – the pert reply: “My eyes.”

The free market. Everyone has heard of the free market, but do they have any idea what it really is? Do they have any idea of the amazing wealth generating ability of the unfettered free market? Probably not, who cares? Well, it’s nearly dead, choked to death by the merciless encroachment of suffocating bureaucratic regulation introduced by the ever expanding, all controlling, wealth destroying socialist behemoth that is consuming the world.

The international bankers who create the money out of nothing and own all the governments, media and industry love socialism for it is the ultimate system of control. They hate the free market and the wealth and independence it creates. It’s very sad, but right before our eyes we are witnessing the destruction of the free market and our independence, our national sovereignty is being given away with every new bill passed (just read the small print). It is so incredible; it’s happening so fast and so few seem to notice what is going on.

Our small independent businesses are being squeezed so hard by stifling regulation and merciless competition from the slave labour Chinese manufacturers. They call it free trade, but there is nothing free about competing with manufacturers who employ slaves.

Even our ability to grow our own food is well on the way to being destroyed. Forget all the propaganda from government about all the programs to help farmers. Encouraging them to get further into debt will be the final nail in the coffin. Premises identification legislation, registration of seed and all the other interference will do nothing other than hasten the collapse of our food production capabilities.

The promotion of genetically modified crops is such insanity, there is mounting evidence that it is actually poisoning our food supply. To read Jeffrey Smith’s very thoroughly researched book: “Seeds of Deception” is most depressing. If we wish to maintain our health, we can no longer eat anything made with canola, soy or corn as all these crops are now predominantly genetically modified. What little testing that has been carried out on animal’s shows that these crops are no longer safe to eat. There are no warning labels on foodstuffs that are genetically modified, so the general public are no better than lab rats in a giant experiment.

The cattle producers are in deep trouble. With all the regulations, there are so few packing plants that the market is essentially manipulated and the price paid to the farmers is insufficient for them to cover their costs and it is only a matter of time before there is a collapse in beef production. The pork market has already hit the wall and countless pork producers are out of business. It’s much the same situation for sheep producers and nothing is done to improve the situation. If the plan is to destroy food production to bring about shortages in ‘the land of plenty’ then the present strategy is brilliant because that is what we are going to get.

The free market will bring an abundance of goods at the cheapest possible price, but the free market is gone. The system we now have more closely resembles ‘corporate fascism’ rather than a free market. It will result in shortages and high prices after enough farmers are driven out of business. Big multi- national corporations will take their place and the consumer will pay dearly for what they have to offer.

by Suzanne Morphet 5 May 2009

At first, I wondered why an international panel of judges chose an Inuit-inspired symbol to represent the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. After all, the stylized stone-pile is borrowed from the inuksuk first built by the Aboriginal people of the Arctic—a long way from the west coast or anywhere else in British Columbia.

Then Norman Hallendy, the Ontario-based author of Inuksuit—Silent Messengers of the Arctic and Tukiliit, helped me to see that the inuksuk—that is, one or more stones in any configuration—is, in fact, a perfect symbol for the Olympics.

He explained that, like the Olympic Games themselves, inuksuit (plural of inuksuk) are ancient. Some could have been erected 3,000 years ago—around the time of the first Olympics. They’re enduring. Not even the Arctic wind knocks them down (though polar bears occasionally manage). They’re meaningful: some are navigational aids; some indicate food caches; still others are objects of veneration. They connect us to our past. They generate excitement and awe. And people travel to see them.

If you’re keen to see the real thing, head north—way north. Inuksuit are the Easter Island statues of the Arctic—and almost as remote. It takes almost a full four hours to fly from Montréal, QC to Iqaluit, the capital of Nunavut. From there, fly to:

Cape Dorset: Continueby boatto Inuksuk Point where a spectacular display of over 100 inuksuit appear to march down the hillside.

Kimmirut: Caribou hunters built inuksuit on hilltops and at the river to frame good fishing spots.

Qikiqtarjuaq: The self-proclaimed “iceberg capital of the world,” where a single inuksuk watches over the town from a hilltop.

Or, you could start in Winnipeg, MB and fly to:

Rankin Inlet: It’s not old and it’s not free-standing, but this inuksuk is the biggest in Nunavut—over four m (13 ft) high.
